  1. Call the Vietnam Immigration Office in Tra Vinh to set an appointment. Inform them that you would like your visa extended since you plan on staying longer in the country. They will then ask you to come to the office. Make sure you bring your passport and visa copy.
  2. At the Immigration Office, they will ask you to fill out the NA5 form. This is the form for requesting a Vietnam visa extension. After you fill out the form, submit it to them, along with your passport and visa copy. The staff will then collect payment for the processing fees.
  3. After 3 to 5 business days, they will call you to inform you regarding your visa extension application. If it’s approved, you’ll have to exit Vietnam and re-enter again for the new visa validity to apply. When you re-enter, the Immigration officer will immediately stamp your passport for re-entry, since the validity of your visa has already been extended.

What’s the Difference Between Visa Extension and Visa Renewal?

With the visa extension, the validity of your original visa will be extended and you are required to exit Vietnam before your original visa expires. But with the visa renewal, there’s no need to exit the country since a new visa will be issued to you immediately. This is why the visa renewal is usually more expensive to apply for compared to the visa extension.

With the visa renewal, you get to choose the type of visa that you wanted to apply for. But you do not have this option with the visa extension. In addition, if you will request a visa extension, you can only get the visa extended for the same validity period or less. For example, if you are holding a 30-day tourist visa, then you can only extend this visa for 30 more days or less. Also, you can only request a visa extension twice. If you’ve already extended the visa twice, your third request will no longer be approved.
